What makes a great teacher great? That’s the question at the heart of 50 Great Teachers, from the NPR Ed Team. The 50 Great Teachers series recently featured Sarah Hagan of Oklahoma, who is a regular participant of the Tulsa Math Teachers’ Circle.

What makes Sarah Hagan great is her passion for math. The 25-year-old teaches at a rural high school in Drumright, OK, a town of 3,000 people. Her methods are unconventional: instead of using textbooks, she gives students blank composition books, which they fill with lessons that Hagan writes or or open-sources from other teachers across the country. “Eventually, the books look like dog-eared, bulging relics from an Indiana Jones movie. Hagan argues that if students are allowed to be creative, they’re more likely to remember what they’ve learned.”
