Summer is a time to take a break and have some fun. It also provides space to reflect and plan for the coming year.
That’s what makes summer the perfect time for a Math Teachers’ Circle immersion workshop. In fact, teachers often call it “math camp.” Fun and often free of charge, these workshops bring together local teachers from different districts, schools, and grades to do math and to reflect on their teaching.
The South East Ohio MTC (SEOMTC) in Athens, OH, held an immersion workshop from June 16-20. “Can teachers develop professional practice, strategies, and content knowledge without traditional PD workshops?” asked the leaders. “We think so, and we’ve designed SEOMTC to be just that. So even if this isn’t ‘typical’ professional development, we’re sure that you’ll find that ‘enjoyment’ breeds ‘development’ as we engage in problem solving.”
At the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) in Palo Alto, CA, the flagship AIM MTC held an all-expenses paid workshop for Bay Area middle school teachers from July 28 – August 1. During the workshop, 18 teachers were busy doing math throughout the day and even into the evening! Meanwhile, 6 veteran MTC members spent the week at AIM creating curriculum materials inspired by or connected to MTC sessions. The week ended with a picnic in the park for workshop participants, friends and family.
In Boca Raton, FL, the Gold Coast MTC held a successful workshop at Wyndham Deerfield Beach Resort from July 28 – August 1 for 16 local teachers plus 5 organizers. They got some great photos of a session titled, “Constructions with GeoGebra” — and even got some local TV news coverage.
In Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, the Mid-Hudson MTC (MHMTC) held their second annual Summer Intensive Workshop at Bard College from July 8-10. Forty teachers from as far away as Long Island traveled to the scenic campus to immerse themselves in mathematics pedagogy and problem solving. Through the support of Bard College, MSRI and Ulster BOCES they were able to offer the workshop for free.
Finally, the Eastern Upper Peninsula MTC (EUP MTC) in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, hosted a one-day workshop for 20 teachers at Lake Superior State University. The university published an article in its campus newsletter and on Facebook, , describing the workshop as a collaborative effort between the university, EUP Intermediate School District, and the EUP Mathematics and Science Center.
EUP MTC leader Valerie Masuga also sent us this photo: “Just wanted to share a pic of the baking racks we found for Set–they worked beautifully!!!”
