Two teams that attended our training workshop in Washington, D.C. a few weeks ago, are already making news back home.
The brand-new Mississippi Delta Math Teachers’ Circle, from Cleveland, MS., was mentioned in its campus newsletter while the team was still in D.C. The article, “Faculty involved with teacher enrichment program,” describes the team’s goals and plans for their new circle. “We want to build and support a vibrant community of people in the Delta who enjoy learning, doing, and explaining math,” said co-leader David Hebert, professor of mathematics at Delta State University.
Last week, Western Carolina University announced the formation of the Smoky Mountain Math Teachers’ Circle in Cullowhee, NC: “WCU faculty, WNC teachers to launch regional program for math teachers.” Sloan Despeaux, associate professor of mathematics at WCU, says she was drawn to the grassroots nature of the Math Teachers’ Circle program. “Instead of trying to effect change from the top, we are working from the ground up to further ignite teachers’ passion for mathematics,” she said.
We look forward to hearing more from these new Circles!
